Dear Velia: College Lessons

I wanted to write a post about my first year in college because I just finished my first year! College is extremely different than high school, obviously. You have more freedom, you meet people all over, you learn who you really are, and you can stay out of drama a little more easier than high school. I went away to school, and even though I did miss New York, I am glad that I left! I met people all over the world from London to South Africa to France to Tokyo. It was nice to meet people who different point of views and cultures, it made me feel like I wad back at home-melting pot. There were a few lessons that I learned my first year in college….
1. Make friends but stay to your self.
I know that when you’re in college it is your last time to make as many friends as possible and meet people easily but I am still telling you to stay true to yourself. Big group of friends who don’t know each others past don’t end up too well. There’s usually a lot of drama, back stabbing, and lairs. It’s your safe bet to keep everything to yourself, and tell your best friend at home what’s going on during school if you need someone to talk to. Remember, you don’t know these people or their past, they could be known to spread rumors or have a big mouth or a big past. I learned that not everyone will like you, not everyone will respect you and not everyone is the person you thought they were. Freshman and Sophomore year are the easiest years to get a high GPA, so take advantage of it and focus on your work!
2. Don’t ‘whore’ out.
Yes, I said it. Girls and guys go nuts in college. People seem to forget their values or morals that they had before they came to college. Most guys don’t want anything serious, trust me. Most just want a fling, a hook up, or someone to keep them company. It’s sad and very hurtful. You think you might have found Mr. Right or Mr. Future but all you met is Mr. I am immature and I just want one thing from you. To the guys who are serious, girls aren’t any better. Most girls that I know really really don’t care about themselves and do whatever they want, whenever… Now, whatever you choose to do is your business but please understand, sleeping with 30-50 guys your first year will only hurt you in the end! Oh, and this ‘it’s college, so no one knows’ is a lie. Everyone knows who gets around, reputation still kind of matters in that sense.
3. Read, study, and focus!
THIS IS NOT HIGHSCHOOL! It can not study before a test and get a B/A..unless you remember everything from class. In college you have to study, you have to focus! Partying is fun but it’s not worth it. There’s always going to be parties, but once you fail a class..you failed it.
